The Port of Hamburg is one of the most important inland ports in Germany. Here, too, investments are being made and the waterway network is being expanded. The construction of the new Lüneburg lock will open up important economic potential. Even now, the trend in barge calls in Hamburg is already upwards and in the modal split, inland shipping has developed positively in recent years. The transport volume increased by 6.9 percent to 155100 TEU in 2020 despite the pandemic. Already in 2019, 16700 TEU more could be handled in Hamburg compared to the previous year. Between 2018 and 2020, this results in an increase in transport volume by barge of around 20.8 percent.
