„Hamburg Express“

The "Hamburg Express" is the latest addition to Hapag-Lloyd's fleet. Measuring an impressive 400 meters in length and with a capacity of nearly 24,000 standard containers (TEU), it is the largest container ship ever to sail under the German flag. This newbuild is the flagship of the innovative Hamburg Express class—a series of twelve sustainable vessels deployed on Hapag-Lloyd's strategically important East-West routes between Asia and Europe.

Like all ships in the series, the "Hamburg Express" features dual-fuel technology. This enables it to run on LNG today, reducing CO₂ emissions by 15–25 percent and significantly cutting sulfur oxide and soot emissions. Ideally, the vessel will be powered by green methane, which would reduce greenhouse gases by 95 percent compared to traditional marine diesel. Additional advancements include an optimized hull design, highly efficient propellers, and a shore power connection.

Construction of the "Hamburg Express" began on the 25th of November 2022 at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Okpo, South Korea. She will be christened in Hamburg on the 4th of November. Her godmother is none other than Eva-Maria Tschentscher, Hamburg's First Lady and wife of the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher.
