Germany’s Foremost Base for Shipowners

Hamburg is Germany’s top location for shipowners. More than 120 German shipping companies are based in the Hanseatic City. Almost 1,500 ships displacing over 46 million GRT, or half the German merchant fleet, are operated from here. In addition, numerous foreign shipowners are represented by branches on the Elbe and Alster. The Hanseatic City is also seen as the world’s ship financing capital. More than 20 issuing houses here offer ship funds in the form of limited partner’s shares in ships. These cover around 80 percent of worldwide chartered containership tonnage. Hamburg, moreover, is the base of several banks notable for ship financing.
