The food industry is one of the Port of Hamburg’s most important customers. In 2016 alone, nearly 25.5 million tons of food and agricultural products were handled via Hamburg.
Part of that was generated by the local food industry in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, where it is the second industry. Well-known companies like Unilever, Kellogg’s, Mars and Nestlé are located here. The Hanseatic City has always been a top address too for wholesalers and foreign traders. Trading in wheat, coffee, tea and spices laid the foundations centuries ago for the success of Hamburg merchants and the wealth of the city.
