Second Finkenwerder Bridge successfully opened to traffic

30 Mar 2026 14:00 Economy

On 28 March 2026, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) took another important step in strengthening the port’s infrastructure: the northern section of the Finkenwerder Bridge along the Finkenwerder Ring was officially opened to traffic as planned. This marks the successful completion of one of the most significant new construction projects in the western port area.

The existing bridge, which had been severely damaged by so-called “concrete cancer”, was completely dismantled over a construction period of around four years and replaced with a modern new structure. The project delivered two high-performance steel arch bridges, weighing approximately 600 and 500 tonnes respectively, which will once again carry six lanes of the Finkenwerder Straße across the important port rail connections to the HHLA Burchardkai Container Terminal and EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg.

Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, commented: “After intensive construction work from 2022 to the end of 2025, we can now fully reopen this route to traffic. This restores a central and efficient connection at the Finkenwerder junction – a crucial step for stable and effective port operations. Finkenwerder Straße is one of the busiest traffic arteries in our port and therefore of central importance. With an investment of around €50 million, we are securing the performance capacity of this infrastructure.”

To maintain road and rail traffic throughout the construction period, the new bridge was built in two separate phases. At the same time, the eastern and western adjacent sections of Finkenwerder Straße were renewed and adapted to the new structures.
