"Multimodal on the Canal"

09 Oct 2025 16:26 Economy

  • The Braunschweig logistics region – an important market for the Port of Hamburg
  • Joint event by the Braunschweig Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V.

There are strong inland waterway connections enabling sustainable freight transport between the Braunschweig region and Hamburg. Against the backdrop of this growing importance, the event “Multimodal on the Canal – Perspectives for the Braunschweig Region” took place on Wednesday at the Restaurant & Café Am Yachthafen GmbH in Wedtlenstedt.

Adalbert Wandt, honorary member of the IHK Braunschweig General Assembly, welcomed the guests and highlighted the region’s strategic location: “We are at the heart of Germany – distances are short and transport links are excellent. The German inland waterway network and the rail system provide fast and efficient routes to Hamburg.”

Markus Heinen, Head of the Western Germany Office of Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V., explained why the Port of Hamburg is so active in the region: “The Braunschweig area is an extremely important market for us – there are more weekly departures from here to Hamburg than from Shanghai to Hamburg.”

Jens Hohls, Managing Director of Hafenbetriebsgesellschaft Braunschweig mbH, stressed the significance of multimodal transport solutions for freight logistics: “The mobility transition can only succeed if all modes of transport are integrated – the hubs in the inland ports are ready.”

Thomas Maaßen, Managing Director of Rhenus Transport GmbH & Co. KG, emphasised the critical role of waterways in freight transport: “Without inland shipping, entire industries would question Germany as a business location. The waterways of Germany and Europe are the only infrastructure capable of absorbing increasing transport volumes without difficulty.”
