A significant milestone has been reached in the electrification of Hamburg’s harbour ferries. On 17 September, a 10-tonne handover container for HADAG’s first in-house charging station was installed in front of the HADAG pontoon at the Fischmarkt (Fish Market). Power from the grid will be transferred from this container to a transformer container located on the pontoon. The transformer container is expected to arrive in mid-October. In parallel, new cable routes are being laid directly within the pontoons. Once complete, the eastern operations pontoon will feature a busbar system with movable collectors, allowing up to four fully electric or hybrid vessels to be charged simultaneously.
The steel structure for the handover container, located directly by the access bridge to the HADAG facility, is particularly striking. Here, the onshore power line will connect via a transfer station to a subsea cable that runs over the access bridge and through the pontoon structure to the transformer container – all safely positioned more than four metres above high-water level.
Commissioning of the charging infrastructure is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year. In the long term, HADAG plans to extend the charging network to all of its operations pontoons so that the electric fleet can be charged at every location.
