US Secretary of Commerce Pritzker Visits HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder

For the second time in three months, a member of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet has visited the highly automated Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA). Following the visit by Secretary of Labor, Thomas Perez, Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker, toured the CTA today.
HHLA Executive Board member, Dr. Stefan Behn, was pleased with the visit from the US delegation: “We are delighted to welcome an US Secretary to the CTA for the second time within a short period. The CTA is clearly viewed in the USA as groundbreaking in its use of automation processes. This encourages us to keep developing the terminal further, so that it continues to be a benchmark in our industry.”
Together with Oliver Dux, Managing Director of CTA, Dr. Stefan Behn led the Secretary’s delegation through the Container Terminal Altenwerder, one of the most modern container terminals in the world. The extensive automation of the CTA, the ongoing further development of the facility and its hinterland connection, which is so important for the Port of Hamburg, were all particular points of interest for the Secretary. The CTA has the largest container rail terminal in Germany.
Dr. Behn explained in detail the BESIC project, which aims to use peak loads of green energy to charge the batteries of electric heavy goods vehicles. BESIC, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics, is a flagship e-mobility project. Secretary Pritzker’s delegation included Consul General, Nancy Corbett, and was joined by Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Frank Horch, the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Hamburg Port Authority, Jens Meier, as well as other economic representatives from the USA and Germany.
