The Speicherstadt historical warehouse district, which has been owned by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) for over 125 years, has today been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the neighbouring Kontorhaus office building area with its famous Chilehaus building. This makes the Speicherstadt historical warehouse district part of Hamburg’s first World Heritage Site.
Dr. Roland Lappin, HHLA executive board member responsible for the real estate Segment and finance, said the following about the Speicherstadt historical warehouse district’s addition to the list of World Heritage Sites: “We and our tenants are very happy that the Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus area have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. This confirms our strategy of further developing the Speicherstadt whilst maintaining its historical and cultural heritage and thereby conserving it in the long term. The Speicherstadt historical warehouse district is not a museum landscape, but a living inner-city area that is constantly changing.”
