Safe and secure tank farms thanks to digital twins

17 Jan 2025 13:52 Digitalization

Digital processing and monitoring of cargo handling is becoming increasingly important to ensure that liquid and gaseous goods can be handled and stored in ports in a safer and more environmentally friendly way in the future. Over the next four years, the DigiTank project at Evos in Hamburg will explore and test how this can be achieved. The project was launched yesterday in the presence of Hamburg's Minister of Economic and Labour Affairs, Dr Melanie Leonhard. The tank farms in the port of Hamburg play an important role in energy supply far beyond the metropolitan region. The Port of Hamburg is a central transshipment point, especially for new energies. A significant part of the demand for energy sources will be met by imports by sea. It is therefore important to be future-proof with modern processes in order to continue to fulfil this important national task of the port safely and efficiently," said the Senator for Economic Affairs.

The central objective of the DigiTank project will be the development of a so-called digital twin, the use of an innovative control centre and a mobile monitoring system for tank farms. The companies involved are Evos Hamburg GmbH, Schotte Automotive GmbH & Co. KG, the University of Duisburg-Essen, Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V. and ma-co maritimes competenzcentrum GmbH. UTV - Unabhängiger Tanklagerverband e.V. and ZLV - Zentrum für Logistik und Verkehr are also associated members.

With DigiTank, we at Evos are setting new standards in the digitalisation and automation of tank farms. Our focus is on combining state-of-the-art technology, such as digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI), with a strong emphasis on safety, sustainability and human-centred working conditions. In this way, we are not only shaping the future of logistics, but also strengthening Hamburg as a centre of innovation," says Michael Lübke, Managing Director of Evos Hamburg GmbH.

This is also emphasised by project partner Dr Philipp Sieberg, Managing Director of Schotte: 'With DigiTank, we are taking the next step in the transformation of the port industry. By developing a digital twin in combination with AI-based data processing, we are making it possible to design the tank farms of the future in an environmentally friendly, safe and sustainable way.

The project participants hope that the increasing digitalisation and automation of the various processes will increase the safety of the tank farm and minimise any environmental damage.

Another positive effect would be to reduce the workload of tank farm employees. This should increase the attractiveness of the profession, which in turn will help to reduce the shortage of skilled workers in tank farms.

The DigiTank project is part of the Innovative Harbour Technologies funding programme (IHATEC II). It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport with almost three million euros. The total volume is almost four million euros.
