Going forward, the Port of Hamburg is well positioned to master changes in container alliances and the accompanying developments in the size of containerships. The Port of Hamburg and German Customs are also well prepared for the possible consequences of a Brexit. These were two of the key issues that Ingo Egloff and Axel Mattern, Joint CEOs of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), and Jürgen Behrens, HHM head of the Representative Office for Southern Germany, shared with their guests at the New Year Receptions at the beginning of January.

These very popular traditional events attracted some 130 guests each in both Munich and Nuremberg and as many as 160 participants in Stuttgart. Attendance of some 40 HHM members at each event was very pleasing. It demonstrates the great interest among our member companies to nurture contacts and develop new ones in each of the home markets of regional logistics companies in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Further topics of the evening were above all the developments and challenges for the Port of Hamburg and the Metropolitan Region, especially in containership handling at the Hamburger container terminals: From 2019, Hamburg has become the hub-port for THE Alliance’s four new Trans-Atlantic liner services. HHM estimates that the transfer of container services from Bremerhaven will bring an additional volume of around 500,000 TEU to the Elbe. Moreover, the positive development and implementation of construction measures for the Elbe fairway adjustment will play an important role in the current year and in 2020.

Both will have an impact on the Free State of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg that enjoy excellent hinterland infrastructure to and from Hamburg both by road and rail, strongly contributing to the stable development of handling in Hamburg. As an example, recently the intermodal terminal in Singen on Lake Constance was introduced directly into the rail links to and from Hamburg, heralding a further increase in rail services to and from the Port of Hamburg. Economic progress of Germany and the rest of Europe in the current year should intensify the successful partnership between the Southern German states and the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.
