This year’s Port Evening in Vienna was notable for marking a special anniversary. Around 250 guests at Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM)’s annual networking event celebrated the first 65 years of the Port of Hamburg’s Vienna Representative Office - as its first anywhere.
On behalf of Port of Hamburg Marketing’s members and his colleagues, CEO Axel Mattern expressed thanks for their dedicated work to Alexander Till, who has headed the Port Representative Office in Vienna since 2007, and Maria Sageder, his Executive Assistant. For several decades the Port of Hamburg’s strong presence in Austria and the HHM Representative Office’s close contacts with its Austrian customers have been essential elements for the successful development of volume between the two locations. Austria is one of our main markets in our Central European hinterland. With the Port Representative Office in Vienna, we offer our members and partners an excellent point of contact for informing themselves about market and sectoral developments in Austria, and also give customers and shippers there the opportunity of forging contacts with businesses in the Port of Hamburg,” said Axel Mattern.
In his speech, Johannes K. Haindl, the German Federal Republic’s Ambassador to Austria, stressed the long-standing relationships between the cities of Hamburg and Vienna.
Alexander Till, head of the HHM Representative Office in Vienna, referred in his speech to the Port of Hamburg’s status as the market leader in Austria for containerized transport over many years. In 2015 around 295,000 TEU were shipped to or from overseas via the Port of Hamburg, setting a new record. Containers were almost entirely transported to and from Hamburg by rail, making Austria a model destination for efficient and environmentally friendly hinterland transport via the Port of Hamburg. About 40 container block trains currently run every week between Hamburg and Vienna, while the total for the whole of Austria actually exceeds 80. Alexander Till sees Hamburg’s crucial competitive advantage as being the balanced ratio of imports and exports on container services to and from Austria, with no public subsidies involved. Alexander Till also provided an overview of structural alterations in sea freight, such as concentration on a handful of alliances between shipping lines. Its smartPORT project makes the universal Port of Hamburg the pacesetter in digitalization and networking of the different modes of transport for meeting tomorrow’s challenges.
Over 40 members of the HHM marketing organisation from Hamburg and the Metropolitan Region, as well as Austria and the Czech Republic, travelled to Vienna to cultivate existing contacts and to forge new ones at the year’s largest maritime event. As ever, the focus of the evening was on personal interaction between HHM members, transport experts, shippers and importers.
