Greetings from the South of France
This year’s country partner is Occitania / South of France, presenting the regional lifestyle of this picturesque region. It is located between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, has tremendous tourist appeal, and at the same time it is the most important organic farming region in France. Occitania invites visitors to this year’s HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY to take a culinary trip through its flavours and aromas, trying specialities such as oysters, Armagnac, craft beer, olive oil and Aligot, a regional dish prepared with mashed potato and cheese.
Visitors can also actively participate in the regional game “quilles de huit”. This “eight-pin bowling” game is played by lots of enthusiasts in the Department of Aveyron in the North of Occitania, and is popular as a beach game right through to the Mediterranean. The aim of the game is to knock down the eight target pins. The Occitania/South of France festival will be opened at 16:00 on Friday by Carol Delga, President of the Region of Occitania, and Dr. Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg, together with Anne-Marie Descôtes, the French Ambassador in Germany.

Close-up to TV stars
Fans of the popular ZDF television series “Notruf Hafenkante” (“Port Emergency”) will be rushing to the autograph signing session from 15:00 to 17:00 on Saturday 11 May, held in authentic style at Kehrwiederspitze – the location of Police Station 21 in the series. Explore new parts of Hamburg
Many of the Hamburg museums and institutions will put on special events as part of the onshore programme. They help to ensure that the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY will be a real celebration for the people of Hamburg, giving them a chance to find out more about their city and to see it in new ways. The UNESCO Word Cultural Heritage tour will be held on all three days, highlighting three outstanding districts of Hamburg – the Kontorhaus District, the Speicherstadt warehouse district, and HafenCity with the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
The “CLASSIC” St. Pauli walk on the Saturday and Sunday takes participants to the world-famous Reeperbahn district with all its highlights. The Architecture harbour trip “Building by the Waterside” on the Saturday focuses on the special relationship between modern architecture by the water and
the traditional world of the port.
The International Maritime Museum encourages hands-on activity in its “You’re the Captain” programme. It opens the ship control simulator to the general public on the Sunday, inviting them to guide a container ship into the Port of Hamburg under difficult weather conditions, with the help
of experienced ship masters. A maritime challenge with suspense and excitement.
The Hamburg Port Museum presents historic harbour exhibits in an authentic environment – original objects from the four-masted barque Peking and other unique exhibits from the age of general cargo, with guided tours on all three days. Exhibits in action include the impressive steam engines of the Saatsee, Germany’s last active floating steam crane (built in 1917), and the steam dredging barge Schutendampfsauger IV (built in 1909).
