Schnieder: Millions for Modernisation of Shipping and Ports

The demands placed on the shipping industry have changed dramatically in recent years. In particular, the structural transformation associated with the energy transition calls for a forward-looking adaptation in order to remain competitive internationally.

Federal Minister for Transport Patrick Schnieder:

"A modern shipping industry with appropriate infrastructure is the backbone of Germany as an economic hub. The federal government, states, and industry must now join forces to counterbalance the pressure of transformation. The modernisation millions are an important step in this direction. Together with the funds that the federal government directly invests each year in maintaining and expanding connections to and from Germany’s seaports, as well as the funds that the states receive directly from the special assets, a comprehensive transformation package can be put together."

In addition, the new Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) program line “Climate-Friendly Shipping and Ports” will make an extra €400 million available over the next four years. These funds are intended to support the implementation of the National Port Strategy and the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping, for example through co-financing the development of shore power and bunkering facilities for alternative fuels, as well as climate-neutral shipping corridors. Funding will also be provided to support the modal shift of public transport and urban commercial traffic to inland waterways. Details on the funding opportunities are currently being developed and will be presented later this year.
