India intensifies measures to combat COVID-19

Hamburg is one of Europe’s leading ports for India’s growing foreign trade market. Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) together with other partners from the Hanseatic City has been managing the Hamburg Representative Office Mumbai since 2011. We asked our colleagues Peter Deubet and Lea Miram for an update about the current situation in India.
India has now issued far-reaching entry requirements. Entering from affected countries, such as Germany, is now subject to certain conditions and exceptions. Our colleagues in Mumbai expect a decrease in the number of flights from/to Germany and Europe soon.
The Port Health Organisation in Mumbai carries out screenings on cargo ships coming from regions affected by COVID-19. All twelve major Indian ports are to monitor seafarers and passengers leaving the ships by establishing screening, detection and quarantine systems to avoid further spreading of the virus.
The Indian export industry reports a significant shortage of containers for export cargo. Most of the required empty containers are still in China due to suspended ship departures.
According to a report published by the UN in the beginning of March, India is among the 15 most-affected economies by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a trade impact of 348 million dollars. Particularly affected will be the chemicals sector at 129 million dollars, textiles and apparel at 64 million dollars and the automotive sector at 34 million dollars.
