Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2025

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) 2025 will see the Hanseatic city take centre stage in the international sustainability debate once again. This event will bring together leading figures from the worlds of politics, business and academia to develop practical solutions to the global challenges of our time, and to actively shape the transition to a climate-friendly and resilient future.

HSC 2025 will focus on three core topics: environmentally friendly shipping, sustainable aviation, and future-proof financing. 'Ensuring that public and private sector investments align with global sustainability goals is crucial,' emphasises Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH).

Jens Meier drew an interesting comparison with sport: clear rules, incentives for good performance and sanctions for violations are just as necessary as continuous knowledge and talent exchange. These rules must be established before the game begins to ensure a level playing field, and they must not be changed during the game. Only through international cooperation and the sharing of best practice solutions can the maritime industry effectively address the challenges posed by climate change.

A highlight of this year's conference was the high-level networking event organised by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with the HPA on 1 June 2025. The boat trip through the Port of Hamburg provided an opportunity for decision-makers to network. Close and trusting cooperation is especially important in times of multiple crises. Decarbonising our industry is a complex issue that can only be solved through joint efforts.

Through its involvement in the conference, the HPA is emphasising its long-term dedication to innovation, climate protection, and the sustainable transformation of port operations. The Port of Hamburg should be seen not only as an international logistics hub, but also as a leader in climate-friendly technologies, digital processes and cross-sector collaboration.
