First delivery of an "all-electric full container stacker" in the Port of Hamburg

04 Feb 2025 15:30 Environment

As part of the decarbonisation of its handling processes, C. Steinweg (Süd-West Terminal) will be integrating a fully electric reachstacker from SANY MARINE into its workflows.

According to the manufacturer, the full container reachstacker is equipped with a 422 kWh lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) battery. These batteries are not only maintenance-free and long-lasting, but also more environmentally friendly than conventional lithium-ion batteries, as they do not contain toxic heavy metals such as cobalt or nickel.

During the test phase, which lasted several weeks, the on-board battery was able to demonstrate its performance with a full charge for 8 to 10 hours in tough handling operations. It was also found that the performance of the all-electric reach stacker is absolutely comparable to that of combustion engine trucks, with operating costs reduced by between 40 and 60%. "At the same time, we are expecting a higher level of availability because the maintenance work will be considerably less", says Thomas Friede, Operations Manager at C. Steinweg. "With the SANY SRSC45E5 we are consciously opting for an emission-free solution that makes an important contribution to our sustainability goals. As a company, we have a great responsibility to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. By using this all-electric machine, we will save more than 70 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. At the same time, we are improving air quality and significantly reducing noise emissions, especially here in the urban environment of the Port of Hamburg. This is an important step towards a climate-friendly and resource-efficient future."

The idea came about when the management teams of C. Steinweg and Bittermann, who already work together on maintenance and repair work at the C. Steinweg terminal, were discussing future-oriented forklift trucks. They quickly agreed on an extensive test of the SANY SRSC45E5 container truck.

The good cooperation during the test phase and the more than satisfactory test results convinced not only the employees but also the management, so that C. Steinweg decided to invest in this innovative and sustainable technology. This step underlines the company's long-term commitment to environmentally friendly logistics.

To make its handling processes CO2-neutral, C. Steinweg (Süd-West Terminal) is integrating an all-electric reachstacker.
