Today, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) welcomed 23 new apprentices and students at its headquarters in Hamburg. This now puts the total number of young trainees in the company at 89.

On 1 August, a new stage of life began for 23 young people at HHLA. 17 of them are starting on their career path with a dual apprenticeship, while six are undertaking a dual study course. Over the next few years, the 10 women and 13 men will complete practical training in HHLA’s various facilities and departments as well as its domestic and foreign subsidiaries. “There’s an increasing need to develop young trainees within the company for careers that are relevant for the future. By providing in-house vocational training and instruction, we are developing the skills that our company will need for future success in the market, while offering our apprentices and students excellent future prospects,” said Carola Aldag, Head of Personnel Development.

HHLA even continued to provide further training and offered technical internships during the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s becoming increasingly challenging to attract apprentices and students to technical fields. It really helps if schoolchildren experience HHLA as an excellent training provider through technical internships,” said Aldag. Twelve young women and men today began technical apprenticeships as mechatronics engineers, mechatronics engineers for refrigeration technology, industrial mechanics, electronics technicians for automation technology, or electronics technicians for building and infrastructure systems. Another two are training to become business people for digitalisation management. The dual study course students have started their degrees in electrical engineering and information technology, business information technology and other subjects.

In a traditionally male-dominated environment, HHLA has for years consistently acted to increase its proportion of women. With regard to training, this includes specifically inspiring well-qualified girls to begin their careers in the company. This year, for example, 43 percent of new trainees are female, again a significantly higher figure than the proportion of women in the company.
