When the first container-only ship, the ‘American Lancer‘, berthed on 31 May 1968 at HHLA’s Burchardkai in the Port of Hamburg, no one would have thought that this inconspicuous steel box would fundamentally change the port. And this change was not only significate for the Port of Hamburg, it effected the whole sea transport business and world trade. For many, it marks the beginning of globalization as we know it today.

That day in May 1968 is rightly seen as historic for Germany’s largest seaport. The container has more decisively shaped the Port of Hamburg ever since, overturning all previous technologies. Today, the container throughput with it’s nearly annual volume of 9 million boxes is the most decisive cargo segment at the river Elbe.
