A Changing Port: International Ideas Competition for Steinwerder-Süd

17 Jan 2017 14:13 Economy

The future of the port area Steinwerder-Süd starts today with an internationally advertised ideas competition. The HPA is planning to develop the 42 hectare-sized area in the central area of the Port of Hamburg in a future-oriented way and has already worked out possible site and usage ideas based on first feasibility analysis. As a previous market exploration, the five-months ideas competition is meant to secure a modern development of the area that is in line with market requirements.

Interested parties of all possible areas can participate in this market consultation process. The area offers potential for up to 1,100 metres of quay wall with three berths for large vessels as well as the production of terminal space at Oderhafen and new water areas as manoeuvring space.

The participants are expected to work out realistic and future-oriented area development concepts, which show under which conditions private providers can operate the area economically – also bearing the creation of permanent, qualified jobs in mind. In particular, innovative concepts are demanded that can be derived from future trends and a strategic market development. Progressive solution approaches such as interlinked logistic processes, new production processes or innovative digitisation concepts should be considered as well.

In addition to the basic feasibility, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is expecting statements on costs and timing as well as funding. The HPA will assess the submitted concepts with regard to the strategic development of the overall area Steinwerder and integrate the result into the comprehensive port planning.

The idea competition offers a prize of 100.000 Euro in total as well as special prizes of 50.000 Euro in total. A Europe-wide award procedure to determine the future operator or investor of the infra- and superstructure of the project area will follow.
