50 years of container handling in Hamburg – the new Port of Hamburg Magazine is now out

The first issue of our Port of Hamburg Magazine in 2018 focuses on the Port of Hamburg’s development over the last 50 years into the one of the world’s top container transhipment hubs.
The triumphant march of the container, which has revolutionized the worldwide transport industry, commenced in the Port of Hamburg on 31 May 1968. With the ‘AMERICAN LANCER’, that day a containership berthed at Burchardkai for the first time. She was first vessel of a new era that has changed the Port of Hamburg for ever.
Initially, scepticism predominated in Hamburg. Would the new transport system with its normed boxes gain acceptance? Would investments in expanding the Port of Hamburg into a container handling hub pay off? Today we realize that if visionary politicians and port managers had not shown the courage at the end of the 1960s to make Hamburg fit for the container, then the port would by no means have become the significant cargo-handling hub for world trade that the Hanseatic City is today.
For the great port, 31 May 1968 is rightly seen as a historic date. For the container has since altered and shaped the Port of Hamburg more than all previous technologies together. This issue of the Port of Hamburg Magazine suitably marks the date, since container handling with an annual volume of around nine million boxes is now the crucial cargo segment on the Elbe.
