On Friday, 26 April 2019, Hamburg's First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher and Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, ceremoniously reopened the completely renovated eastern tunnel of the St. Pauli Elbtunnel. The St. Pauli Elbtunnel was put into operation in 1911 - it has been Hamburg's landmark ever since and is a masterpiece of engineering. Since the end of 2009, the eastern tunnel has been completely renovated: The entire segment construction was uncovered and over 200,000 rivets inspected. In addition, the wall tiles, roadway and lighting were renewed or restored in close consultation with the heritage conservation authorities. At the same time, the tunnel tube was equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
