Breakbulk handling is one of the Port of Hamburg’s core strengths as a multipurpose-port. Whether it’s steel products, project cargo or oversized heavy-lift shipments, Hamburg offers efficient solutions for cargo that cannot be transported in containers. Specialised terminals, experienced teams and state-of-the-art handling equipment ensure flexible, tailor-made services for even the most complex transport requirements.
Breakbulk refers to the transportation of cargo that exceeds standard dimensions and cannot be shipped in containers. This includes oversized and heavy goods such as machinery, project cargo, vehicles, wind turbine components, generators and steel products.
Today, breakbulk handling is widely regarded as one of the most demanding disciplines in logistics. Every shipment requires careful planning, specialised equipment and well-coordinated processes, as cargo can vary significantly in size, weight and shape. The Port of Hamburg excels in this field, offering specialised terminals, experienced service providers and excellent hinterland connections.
At the Port of Hamburg, non-containerised cargo is handled at seven high-performance multipurpose terminals. These facilities manage a wide range of cargo types, including heavy-lift shipments, project cargo, oversized units and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo. Each terminal specialises in specific cargo segments, covering everything from metals and forest products to vehicles, turbines and large components for wind energy projects. Modern handling equipment ensures the safe and efficient movement of exceptionally heavy and oversized cargo. Selected heavy-lift facilities are capable of handling individual loads weighing more than 400 tonnes. For rolling cargo, dedicated RoRo terminals provide specialised ramps and extensive storage and handling areas, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
Multipurpose vessels are defined by their versatility. These ships are capable of carrying a wide range of dry cargo types and are almost always equipped with their own cargo-handling gear. The lifting capacity of onboard cranes is indicated by SWL (Safe Working Load), measured in tonnes. This refers to the maximum permissible load a lifting device can safely handle under normal operating conditions.
These vessels are true multi-talents. In addition to carrying containers, typically stowed on deck, they are also designed to transport rolling cargo. Their internal decks can be raised or lowered, allowing the optimal clearance to be adjusted depending on the type of load, whether passenger cars or heavy construction machinery. Vehicle carriers, also known as “pure car carriers”, load cargo that is driven on board on its own wheels. The largest of these ships can transport up to 8,000 passenger vehicles.
Container ships are designed specifically for transporting standardised containers. However, they can also carry breakbulk cargo loaded on flat racks or in oversized crates. As these units cannot be stacked, they are usually stowed in the top tier of the underdeck cargo holds.
The Port of Hamburg is a key hub for conventional general cargo transport: numerous shipping lines connect the port with markets around the world. Around 15% of vessel calls are dedicated to general cargo, project cargo and RoRo services. Flexible services, specialised handling operators and close cooperation between partners ensure efficient and reliable transport solutions within the breakbulk segment.
ENAK, HHLA III and HHLA IV are high-performance floating cranes used in port operations to safely lift and move heavy cargo such as ship propellers, machine components and other large-scale equipment. Across the entire Lower Elbe up to Brunsbüttel, these powerful units come into action whenever cargo cannot be handled by container cranes or other shore-based equipment due to its size or weight.
The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) operates the floating cranes HHLA III and HHLA IV, with lifting capacities of 200 and 100 tonnes respectively. For specific projects—such as loading a 100-tonne ship propeller—they can also be used in tandem operations. The floating crane ENAK, with a lifting capacity of 600 tonnes, is the most powerful floating crane in Germany. It is owned by Lührs Schifffahrt GmbH. It enables the handling of exceptionally heavy and oversized cargo that exceeds the limits of conventional harbour cranes and is therefore mainly used for heavy-lift and project cargo such as industrial plants, transformers, large components for the energy sector or ship parts.
