The Port of Hamburg: The first choice for handling Austrian foreign trade goods

Trade relations between Austria and Hamburg have existed for centuries and have intensified over time. Since the 1950s, the Port of Hamburg has played an increasingly central role for the Austrian economy and has been an important transhipment centre since the 1970s. Particularly noteworthy are the port's excellent railway connections and worldwide liner network, which are of great importance for companies in Austria. Since the introduction of containerisation, the Port of Hamburg has remained the most important port for the Austrian economy without interruption.

In 2024, 308,000 TEU were transported between Hamburg and Austria. The most important goods include timber, paper, machinery, beverages, fittings and equipment. Another important business segment is the import of around 2 million tonnes of coal and ore, which voestalpine transports to Linz via the Port of Hamburg every year.

Austria benefits from around 100 weekly container train connections. Most transport between Hamburg and Austria is carried out in an environmentally friendly manner by rail, which is why the Port of Hamburg is also considered a ‘GreenPort’ for Austria.

Activities of HHR Vienna

The Port of Hamburg has had its own representative office in Austria since 1951 - the oldest port representation worldwide. At our Vienna branch, we maintain valuable contacts with companies in the transport industry, including shippers, forwarders, shipping companies, operators and rail transport companies, as well as associations and institutions in the maritime industry. Every year, we hold over 200 face-to-face meetings with decision-makers from these sectors.

Our tasks are diverse. We look after member companies that are active on the Austrian market and offer them support with various issues. An important part of our work is the development of strategic networks, through which we promote dialogue between our members and the Austrian market. We also regularly organise specialist events, such as the Hamburg Port Evening in Vienna, the largest maritime event in Austria with up to 300 guests. We also organise numerous other specialist events together with our Austrian member companies. We also ensure that our members are regularly informed about current developments in the Port of Hamburg and the metropolitan region. We also organise excursions to the Port of Hamburg for selected specialist groups.
