The Port of Hamburg – the best choice for transhipment of Austrian foreign trade cargoes

The excellent trade relations between Austria und Hamburg go back for centuries. Since the 1950s, especially, the Port of Hamburg has gained in importance for the Austrian economy. It has been an important transhipment centre since the 1970s. Very good rail links and the Port of Hamburg’s worldwide liner service network are appreciated by firms Austria – with Hamburg topping Austria’s container traffic table for over 20 years. In 2021, 321,000 TEU were transported between Hamburg and Austria, the main types of goods include wood, paper, beverages, fittings, machinery and equipment. Since 2019, voestalpine imports an annual volume of more than 2 million tons of coal and ores to Linz via Hamburg.

Rail is the leading carrier for freight from Austria. 98 percent of the Austrian container volume that is transshipped in Hamburg is transported by environmentally friendly rail. Therefore, 100 container train connections between terminals in Austria and the Port of Hamburg are offered on a weekly basis.

Activities of HHR Vienna

The Port of Hamburg has run its own representative office in Austria since 1951. This has been active for the port for longer than any other. It cultivates very good contacts in the transport industry, with shippers, forwarders, shipping agencies, operators and rail companies, as well as with trade associations and institutions in the maritime sector. More than 200 appointments with decision maker are organized by the representative each year.

The office looks after member companies interested in the Austrian market, builds networks, organizes events, and provides information in Austria on the latest developments at Germany’s largest all-purpose port and the Metropolitan Region. The representative office is also the first point of contact for Austrian companies or politicians seeking to organize visitor itineraries in and around the Port of Hamburg and other ports in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. One highlight is the Port of Hamburg Evening, with over 300 guests the Austrian maritime sector’s largest function. This and other events enable Port of Hamburg Marketing members to forge essential contacts with the Austrian transport industry and advertise their range of services.
