Port of Hamburg – Gateway for European Exports to the UAE and the Gulf Region

The United Arab Emirates and the wider Gulf region are among the world’s most dynamic growth markets, strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. As a leading logistics, trade and energy hub, the region offers strong demand for high-quality industrial goods, machinery and advanced technologies from Germany. With long-standing trade relations and well-established liner services, the Port of Hamburg serves as a reliable gateway for European exports to the Gulf region, particularly to Dubai.

Renewable energy is a key growth driver in the region. Major investments in solar power, wind energy and green hydrogen are positioning the Gulf as a future global hub for sustainable energy production. The Port of Hamburg supports this transformation as a central transhipment hub for energy infrastructure and, in the long term, as a strategic import hub for green hydrogen, or rather its derivatives.

Activities

The "Hamburg Representative Office UAE and Gulf Region", based in Dubai, was established in 2006 and represents the interests of Hamburg’s business community in the United Arab Emirates and across the wider Gulf region. It is supported by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Innovation, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, Hamburg Tourism, Hamburg Messe und Congress, and since January 2026 also by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM).

As a central point of contact, the Representative Office provides information and facilitates connections for HHM members seeking to enter or expand in the region. It advises companies with an interest in the Gulf markets and maintains close relationships with industry, trade and relevant associations locally. A key focus lies on strategic dialogue as well as the development of cooperation and long-term partnerships between the Port of Hamburg and organisations in the Gulf states, particularly with regard to strengthening resilient supply chains and positioning the Port of Hamburg as a future hub for green hydrogen and its derivates.

The HHR Dubai also organises visitor programmes for regional companies to the Port of Hamburg and the ports of the metropolitan region.
