HHR Budapest

The Port of Hamburg – overseas centre for Hungary as logistics hub

Thanks to its excellent hinterland transport connections and well-established logistics chains, the Port of Hamburg has established itself as an extremely attractive market partner in Hungary. Hungary is a central hub in the distribution of international flows of goods within Europe. The favorable geographical location between the countries of Central, Southern and Eastern Europe and the routes of the TEN corridors through Hungary play a decisive role here.

The Port of Hamburg also shines with its excellent departure density and the high quality and reliability of its handling. Rail is the most important mode of transport to/from Hungary. Every week, 26 block trains run between Hamburg and Budapest. In addition to the Budapest terminals, Dunajska Streda and Kosice in Slovakia are also important terminals.

In 2022, the Hungarian economy achieved a growth rate of 4.6%, surpassing the EU average of 3.6%. Despite the impact of war and sanctions, it is still the sixth-highest growth rate since the fall of communism, although the growth momentum has slowed down compared to the strong previous year. Due to inflation, the economic growth rate is predicted to decrease to 0.6% in 2023. The Hungarian government expects a recovery in 2024. The Port of Hamburg saw a significant increase in container volumes transported to/from Hungary, with a total of 153,179 TEU and an increase of 17.7%. The industry is hopeful that delivery volumes will remain stable.

Activities of HHR Budapest

Since 1992, the staff based in Budapest have been representing the interests of the seaport transport industry in Hamburg and the region in Hungary. The experts have their "ear to the market" and maintain good contacts with numerous companies from industry and trade, the transport and logistics sector as well as with business organizations and political decision-makers in order to provide information on current developments in the Port of Hamburg. The members of the marketing organization, who are regularly supplied with the latest market and industry data for Hungary, also benefit from the continuous establishment and expansion of contacts. Other services for members are, for example, the analysis of potential customers, the organization and preparation of customer visits or events in Hungary.

Port of Hamburg Marketing usually organizes several events annually in Hungary, including the Port of Hamburg Evening in Budapest - unfortunately this was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the restrictions to the pandemic - although the evening is one of the most popular events in the logistics industry in Hungary. The focus here is on the exchange of market information and contacts between the participants.

Hopefully, visitor programs in the Port of Hamburg for customers from Hungary can be organized again soon, or delegation trips by Hamburg's business community to Hungary can be accompanied.
