Update on the Port of Hamburg market region North Rhine-Westphalia and western Germany

Our colleague Markus Heinen, Head of the Port of Hamburg Representative Office in Dortmund, reports on the current situation regarding cargo traffic in the market regions North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. NRW is one of the most important federal states in Hamburg's Hinterland traffic measured by transport volume. Its industry is heavily foreign trade oriented.

Many companies from Markus Heinen’s market region expect equipment shortages in container traffic. The automotive sector is most affected. The food sector is experiencing a shortage of reefer containers, most of which are needed for the transport of meat products, especially to/from China, and which are now insufficiently available for the transport of fruits and vegetables.

The chemical industry is registering first signs of a slow recovery in Chinese production and deliveries. Western German shippers continue to anticipate equipment shortages for German exports, especially as shipping space on the route between Europe and Asia, is limited.
