The world’s greatest port festival from 10 to 12 May

The 830th HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY will be held from Friday 10 May to Sunday 12 May, presenting a high-quality, richly varied music programme with free live concerts. It features a total of twelve stages along the Elbe embankment, transforming the world’s greatest port festival into a gigantic open-air celebration. The music programme has something for every taste, ranging from live concert transmissions from the Elbphilharmonie concert hall to chart stormers and shanty choirs, hip-hop, oldies, and punk rock from all parts of the world. Plus drag shows, jazz musicians and cover bands.

Concert recordings and a live concert with Anne-Sophie Mutter from the Elbphilharmonie

Following the successful premiere in 2018, an open-air arena will be set up at Platz der Deutschen Einheit in front of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall again. It provides space for some 500 concert fans on the steps at the base of the building, presenting music in a breathtaking setting. The Elbphilharmonie Concerts on Screen series shows concert recordings and a live concert from the main auditorium on a big LED screen. The main highlight will be live transmission of a concert with Anne-Sophie Mutter from the Elbphilharmonie starting at 20:00 on Sunday 11 May 2019. Her programme is dedicated to Mozart, with three of his violin concertos and a symphony. At the same time she will lead the Vienna-Berlin Chamber Orchestra, whose musicians are drawn from the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras.

The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, that is the orchestra in residence for the main concert hall, can be heard with its Star Wars programme, Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony, and the opera “Die Fledermaus”. The best of Afro-Pop can be heard in the recordings of the acclaimed concert by Youssou N’Dour and his band Le Super Étoile de Dakar, and the programme “Remain In Light” with charismatic singer Angelique Kidjo. The Munich Philharmonic under its chief conductor Valery Gergiev will perform works by Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Mahler. And an exciting juxtaposition of music by Antonio Vivaldi and contemporary Italian composers will be presented by star violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Giovanni Antonini with his specialist ensemble Il Giardino Armonico.

Live music, talk, and a backstage view of the NDR

NDR 90.3 and “Hamburg Journal” present a packed programme of live acts, interesting talk show guests and fascinating information about NDR (North German Broadcasting Service) from their base just next to the Old Elbtunnel. The musical highlight on the Friday will the performance by the Goldmeister Duo at 20:45. They have a unique style mix, with 1990s German-language hip-hop and 1920s swing music. Singer-songwriter Falk will perform at 14:15 on the Saturday, and the cover band Good Music Live performs the greatest hits from many decades of musical history from 20:30. And finally, the Danish band Bryan Adams Tribute presents the sound of the Canadian rock star from 19:00 on the Sunday.

The on-stage programme includes for the first time the popular concert series “NDR 90.3 Hamburg Sounds.” It features Miu with a guest appearance by Sarajane on the Saturday, Nick March and Norma on the Sunday, and the Duo St. Pauli on the Friday and Saturday. NDR at first hand is the subject of “Treffpunkt Hamburg”, where visitors can talk to presenters and editors, and take a look around the Hamburg Journal TV studio with a virtual-reality headset – and an outside broadcasting van from NDR 90.3 gives an insider’s view of live radio transmission.

“Hafen Rock” will be presented on four stages located between St. Pauli Hafenstrasse and the Fish Market. The Holsten Stage puts the focus on alternative music. The top act there will be the Düsseldorf Metalcore Band Callejon at 22:30 on the Saturday. Other performers include newcomer bands from the current Eventim pop music course, regulars such as the cover bands Die Toten Ärzte and Bon Scott, and the rock’n’rollers of Boppin'B. The programme starts at 12:00 each day with traditional sailors’ songs performed by a shanty choir.
Punk rock features at the Jolly Roger Stage with bands from Germany, Europe and overseas. The bands on the Friday are No Konforme from Spain, La Gachette from Canada, and Skassapunka from Italy. The new HafenJazz Stage presents a wide-ranging programme of jazz, soul, blues and swing with Annette Kluge, Felix Dehmel and the illustrious Marcus Grosse. One of the highlights will be the performance at 16:30 on the Sunday by the eight-man Hamburg jazz-funk fusion project NuHussel Orchestra. And the Hafen Rock programme is rounded off by Elbcopa del Sol with Cuban sounds from the Sol Latino band and delicious cocktails.
