Focus Asia: Senator hosts virtual delegation visit to port partners

04 Feb 2021 11:00 Economy

In the coming days, Senator for Economics and Innovation Michael Westhagemann will set off on a trip to Asia – without boarding a plane. Continuing his Port Roadshow from 2019, he will be visiting Hamburg port partners in Southeast and East Asia. Westhagemann will be accompanied by Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of HHLA's Executive Board, Michael Blach, CEO Eurogate GmbH, Jens Meier, CEO Hamburg Port Authority, and Axel Mattern, CEO Port of Hamburg Marketing. The program includes several engagements, all of which will be conducted virtually.

Senator Westhagemann: "In times like these, it is especially important to me that we maintain a close relationship with our customers and partners worldwide. While the Corona pandemic has temporarily brought world trade to a standstill, Asia has once again proven itself to be the engine of the global economy and an important partner for the Port of Hamburg. I am committed to further strengthen our good relations with shipping companies and other businesses. This benefits not only Hamburg and the metropolitan region as a business location, but Germany as a whole.“

The virtual tour will start on Thursday, 4 February with an exchange at Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe, Japan, where the Senator will learn about the world’s first hydrogen import terminal. The panelists will discuss details of a financial, technical and operational nature and consider possible applications for Hamburg's plans for an import terminal for green hydrogen generated primarily by wind and solar power.

In the course of February, the delegation led by Senator Michael Westhagemann will engage in talks with major Asian shipping companies and finally extend its journey to Hamburg's European port partners. The agenda covers not only the current situation of trade and shipping in times of the pandemic and the relationship between the Port of Hamburg and its respective partners. It will also focus on recent developments and future projects, including the fairway adjustment and plans for the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub.

Media notice: Upon concluding the trip, Senator Michael Westhagemann will give a recap. A separate invitation will follow.
