The Hamburg Metropolitan Region is one of Europe’s most powerful and diverse economic regions. Located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, it serves as Germany’s gateway to Scandinavia (and vice versa), while also functioning as a logistics hub for Central and Eastern Europe. The region is defined by its close interconnection between industry, research, and modern infrastructure.
Key locational advantages include a strong, diversified industrial base, globally connected ports, and its strategic role as an international logistics hub. Industry giants such as Airbus, Blohm+Voss, and Aurubis help shape the region – alongside leading players in the energy and hydrogen sectors, as well as centres of excellence in future-defining technologies like artificial intelligence.
The metropolitan region brings together four federal states, 20 municipalities, and twelve economic and social partners – a collaborative alliance that has been driving innovation and regional development for over 50 years. Each year, cross-state initiatives are supported through a dedicated regional fund, with a focus on sustainable mobility, renewable energy, and digital logistics.
