Home | Statistics | Top 10 Trading Partners in Seaborne Container Traffic
Trade with China — Hamburg’s most important trading partner — recorded solid growth in the past year, rising by 6.2% to 2.3 million TEU. China thus remains firmly in first place, followed by the United States with 510,000 TEU. After record volumes in previous years, however, US trade experienced a noticeable slowdown in 2025 (-25.6%), largely due to the US administration’s tariff policies, which dampened demand and, in turn, throughput.
By contrast, the emerging market of India developed very positively. Supported by an expanded network of direct liner services, container throughput with India surged by 49.2% to 290,000 TEU in 2025 — a new record level for Hamburg.
In addition, throughput with Sri Lanka — the largest transhipment hub for the Indian subcontinent — increased significantly, rising by 22.4% to 172,000 TEU, also marking a new record volume.
