The Hamburg port railway is the shunting, transfer and waiting area between the handling facilities of the terminals and connecting companies on the one hand and the German and European hinterland on the other. Around 210 goods trains with over 5,400 wagons run over the port railway's almost 300 km long track network every day.
At the end of the year, rail-bound seaport hinterland transport recorded significant growth in container transport and stable development in wagonload transport. In 2024, the railway moved 46.2 million tonnes and 2.6 million TEU.
