Containers are the defining feature of operations at the Port of Hamburg. Both the HHLA container terminals in Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort, as well as the EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg, clearly demonstrate the central importance of container handling in Hamburg.
In 2025, a total of 8.3 million TEU were handled at the port’s quays. With approximately 81.0 million tonnes, container throughput accounted for nearly 71% of total cargo handling. The share of containerised cargo within overall general cargo throughput — referred to as the containerisation rate — reached 98.6% at the Port of Hamburg.
Loaded containers represent the higher value-added segment within container handling. In 2025, the volume of loaded containers amounted to 7.0 million TEU, corresponding to more than 84% of total container throughput.
