For years now, container handling has been the dominant segment at the Port of Hamburg. HHLA's container terminals Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort as well as the Eurogate terminal clearly show how important container handling has become for the port.
In 2023, the Port of Hamburg saw 7.7 million TEU pass through its quayside. With nearly 77 million tonnes of transported goods, container throughput accounts for almost 70 percent of the total throughput volume. The degree of containerisation, representing the share of container cargo throughput within total general cargo throughput, now stands at nearly 99 percent in the Port of Hamburg.
Loaded containers represent the more value-adding portion of container throughput. Out of the total container throughput of 8.3 million TEU in 2023, loaded containers accounted for approximately 6.7 million TEU, constituting nearly 87 percent. Around 996,000 TEU were handled empty during the same period.
