The Museum Harbour Oevelgönne – beautifully situated on the main shipping channel of the River Elbe near Altona – is a non-profit, privately run association founded in 1976. Its mission is to restore former working vessels and keep them operational. Most of these ships date from between 1880 and 1960 and were all of great importance to northern Germany and the Port of Hamburg in terms of supply, infrastructure, and services. They undoubtedly played a key role in shaping the city’s economic growth.
Many of the vessels moored here were once discovered as decaying wrecks in remote locations and have since been painstakingly restored over many years, based on historical literature, models, and drawings, to reflect their original condition.
