Shanghai’s port partnership with Port of Hamburg was sealed in May 2004. The Chinese coastal city is located in the Yangtze delta, just 20 kilometers south of the Yangtze estuary on the Sea of China. The Yangtze is China’s longest river and the country’s most important waterway.
Port of Shanghai is – measured in TEU – the biggest port of the world with a throughput of 36 million TEU in 2015. The port area on mainland China has a draft of no more than 11 meters. Therefore, a deep-sea port was built about 50 kilometers off the Shanghainese coast to handle the largest containerships from anywhere in the world. Three port areas with altogether six terminals are kept ready for the main business of the port – container handling. Shanghai connects China to North America, Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf, the Red and Black Sea, Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and further parts of the world. Due to its location close to the Yangtze river, Shanghai is also China’s most important transshipment center for national trade.
Container traffic between China and Hamburg came to 2.5 million TEU in 2015. As of today, there are 15 liner services between the two partner ports. Among the Chinese lines calling at Hamburg are the container shipping line COSCO and China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), which have combined their container shipping activities under the umbrella of China COSCO as of March, 2016.
