Megamax-Carrier “Berlin Express“

At a length of 400 metres and a breadth of 61 metres, the “Berlin Express“ is one of the largest container ships in the world. With the “Berlin Express“ and its eleven sister ships, Hapag-Lloyd is launching the new Hamburg Express class. The ships can accommodate a total of around 23,600 TEU. This includes 1,500 connections for reefer containers.

A special feature is their propulsion system. The Hamburg Express Class is equipped with dual-fuel technology. This means that the ships can already run on LNG, but are also prepared to use future non-fossil fuels such as e-methane. The large container ship is powered by a MAN main engine with an output of over 75,000 KW. This enables it to reach a cruising speed of 22 knots.

The “Berlin Express“ of the long-established Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd sails in the FE 3 liner service between the Far East and Northern Europe together with the shipping companies ONE, HMM and Yang Ming. The “Berlin Express“ was built by the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in South Korea.

On the 2nd of October 2023, the mega-carrier will be officially christened the “Berlin Express“ by Elke Büdenbender, the wife of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Container Terminal Burchardkai in Hamburg.
