Yokohama is located in the northwestern part of Tokyo Bay. The partnership agreement with Port of Hamburg was commenced in October 1992 and is therefore Hamburg’s earliest. A major part of the cooperation is based on a regular exchange of technical staff.
Port of Yokohama has three piers with a total of 17 berths. It is well connected to the important transport hubs Tokyo and Shizuoka. In 2016, the Japanese port handled a total throughput of 2.8 million TEU. Container traffic between Japan and Hamburg came to 131.858 TEU in 2016.
As of today, there are four liner services between the ports of Hamburg and Yokohama. Main goods for export are complete cars plus automotive parts and machinery. Imports consist largely of agricultural products, machinery and raw materials. At the same time, the port constitutes Yokohama’s chief sightseeing attraction.
