Company presentation fromIn the 14th century, pirate Klaus Störtebeker was wreaking havoc for the Hanseatic League. He was beheaded in 1401 at the Grasbrook in today's HafenCity together with 40 other pirates.
Even today the legend of Störtebeker is deeply embedded in Hamburg’s culture: The gold crown of St. Chaterine’s Church is supposed to be made of Störtebeker’s gold, hidden in the mast of his ship, and the pirate flag of the football club FC St. Pauli is a tribute to the famous pirate.
A two-ton bronze monument, built in 1982, shows him naked and tied up just before his execution. The statue is currently on display in front of the Maritime Museum Hamburg. Its pedestal bears the inscription "God's friend and the world's enemy".
