Company presentation fromThe Port of Busan is a long-standing partner of the Port of Hamburg. The partnership agreement was signed in October 2012. Busan is the world's sixth largest container port. In 2022, around 22 million TEUs were handled here.
Thanks to its favorable location in the south of the Republic of Korea, the Port of Busan is part of the shipping routes between Europe and East Asia and the so-called transpacific route between Asia and the USA. At over 50 percent, the transshipment share is very high.
The port is divided into two areas – a North (Old) Port and the New Port. Busan North Port is the port of call for intra-Asia liner services and is being restructured, including for tourism. Most of the cargo handling has been gradually shifted to the New Port since 2006. Busan New Port was opened in 2006 and has been continuously expanded ever since, so that today a total of 29 berths are available for ships of all sizes. There are a total of seven container terminals and one multi-purpose terminal. Another 526,452-square-meter area is currently being developed south of Pier 7, which is scheduled for completion by 2027 and will provide space for six additional container cranes. In addition, areas are being developed for the Jinhae New Port west of the New Port. The first phase is scheduled for completion by 2030 and will provide nine additional berths with a capacity of over eight million TEUs per year.
