For centuries shipping has been the backbone of global trade. Now, at a new turning point in mankind ´s history, traditional economic practices and interactions are increasingly being challenged. As for the shipping sector in particular, a growing gap can be felt between the ‘reaction time’ needed to implement new competitive, yet sustainable business strategies, and the frequency and velocity of change in the systems. The Hapag-Lloyd Symposium critically discusses the need for transformation in the shipping sector in this environment. What are the opportunities of the sector to develop in a context of decarbonisation, possible de-growth, restructuring supply chains and new emerging geographies of trade? And what is the role of technology and digitalisation in this transformation?

We look forward to discussing these issues with several distinguished international maritime experts from academia, business, and politics.
