Unlike seagoing ships, inland waterway craft mainly sail on rivers. They transport containers, general, heavy, loose and liquid cargoes. From Hamburg, cargo is mainly transported upriver and as far as the Czech Republic. Magdeburg, Dresden, and Riesa are important ports on the Upper Elbe. Inland waterway craft are often equipped with a bridge of adjustable height and a retractable mast to facilitate safe passage under inland bridges.
