EXPORT GATEWAY ■
After the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, German exports have recently picked up further. Yet Germany’s various sectors and regions have been affected to a differing extent. We have summarized the trend in two key industries. In addition, we have asked three experts for their assessments. The third part of our report covers the situation and prospects in markets served by our representative offices.
CHEMICAL/PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
The COVID-19 crisis has presented challenges to many sectors. Even if reverses were relatively minor, the chemical/pharmaceutical industry did not escape. For the combined sector, output for the first five months was down 1.5 percent on the previous year. One nota- ble fact is that of the two, the chemical industry was affected more strongly. A more serious collapse was averted thanks to minimal impact in the first quarter. Compared to other key industries in Germany, chemicals emerged well. Even globally, the down- turn there remained minimal. Worldwide chemical/ pharmaceutical industry output between January
and May was 2.2 percent down on the previous year. Some countries even had increases to report. Even if there can be no talk of an ‘all clear’, compa- nies in the sector have a good chance of surviving the crisis. However, should a ‘second wave’ occur and industry be laid low for a longer period, the chemicals sector will also be faced with long-term effects.
