Ho Young Lee, President of the Benemore Corporation, has been the Port of Hamburg’s representative in South Korea since 1988.

In countless presentations, conversations and events, Lee has helped make the Port of Hamburg an important European logistics hub for Korean exporters, forwarders, business associations and shipping companies.

Mr. Lee, who used to be an executive in a trade and shipping company himself, has made good use of his experience and his close contacts to the benefit of Korean foreign trade firms.

He is a valued advisor, and of course the Port of Hamburg also profits from his success. As a member and spokesman of various logistics and shipping associations, Mr. Lee also actively takes a stance on fundamental issues in foreign trade and logistics.

Furthermore, Mr. Lee has helped make the Port of Hamburg known in the scientific community at institutes and universities.

A project of particular importance to Mr. Lee, and in which Ms. Nam Yeon Lee assists him in the day-to-day tasks, is container transport by rail in so-called block or unit trains. With support from POLZUG and TFG Transfracht International, this container train system, which plays a very important role for the Port of Hamburg, has been successfully introduced and made known among Korean foreign trade and industrial companies.

Twenty-eight full container liner services link Hamburg with East Asia on a weekly basis. Seven out of nine liner services between Northern European and Korean ports call at the Port of Hamburg.

This exemplifies Hamburg’s important position in seaborne foreign trade with Korea. The four largest container ports in the Republic of Korea are Pusan, Gwangyang, Incheon and Ulsan. The two ports Pusan and Gwangyang are especially important for container traffic to and from Hamburg. Pusan handled about 86 percent and the Port of Gwangyang handled 14 percent of the containers transported between Hamburg and Korea in 2007.
