The Port as an Economic Factor

The port has always been extremely important for ocean shipping. It is not only the largest German seaport, but also the second largest container port in Europe. Hamburg ranks eleventh among the world’s largest container ports.

The port is the supporting pillar of Hamburg’s economy. In the city, around 40,000 people are employed directly in and around the port, which accounts for 176,000 jobs in the whole metropolitan area.
