More and more large container ships call at the Port of Hamburg

Approximately 12,000 seagoing vessels call at the Port of Hamburg per year. Thereof mor than 7,000 are container ships.

In the year of 2008 more than 500 ship arrivals with an anchorage capacity between 8,000 and 10,000 TEU and more than two dozen with over 10,000 TEU could be registered. For the year 2009 Hamburg counts on triplication up to 90 start-ups of the so-called Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS).

The CMA CGM VELA was with an anchorage capacity of 11,038 TEU the largest container ship in the Port of Hamburg in 2008. In the year 2009 there were spectacular start-ups, too. The MARIT MAERSK with a length of 367 metres was 15 metres longer than all the other container ships which called at the Port of Hamburg until February 2009. On 20 April 2009 the new flagship of the French shipping company CMA CGM moored at the Port of Hamburg for the first time. The CMA CGM ANDROMEDA was equipped with its storing position for 11,356 TEU - measured on the capacity - the largest container ship which was handled in the Port of Hamburg until now.

Ships with a cargo capacity of more than 8,000 TEU were responsible for more than a quarter of the container handling in the Hanseatic City in 2008; tendency is rising. In contrast the share of the handling of ships with a middle magnitude from 4,000 to 6,000 TEU is declining.

The statistics show the ship arrivals per year in the corresponding class of ship measures. In the background you can see a typical ship of this class.
