Hydraulic Engineering and Commercial Diving

Hydraulic Engineering and Commercial Diving

The Hamburg Port Authority is responsible for keeping landside and seaside traffic in the port functioning smoothly. Its duties include engineering, dredging, repairs, and flood control, as well as environmental protection. It operates its own fleet of dredges and two floating cranes that are able to lift loads of up to 200 metric tons.

Specialised construction and civil engineering firms and even professional divers carry out construction projects at the waterfront and in the water. With their experience and know-how, they are involved in harbour construction projects all over the world, and not just locally. Hamburg divers work on offshore platforms, power plants, and dams, as well as on docks and port facilities.

The German Port Technology Association HTG, which deals with scientific, technical, and economic issues in regard to waterways, coastal engineering, and marine construction, also shows Hamburg’s competence in these areas.

The Hamburg office of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau) is another expert institution in this area. It is responsible among other things for providing expert opinions and consulting, as well as research and development, in the field of hydraulic engineering in coastal areas.
