The Port of Hamburg is located the farthest east of the German North Sea ports, giving it an advantageous position in Central Europe.
The port serves as an important transit port, especially for cargo to and from Central and Eastern Europe. Good land and inland waterway connections to the hinterland make Hamburg an important logistics hub for Northern Europe. The port’s advantage of location helps reduce transportation costs.
The port is located for the most part in the southern part of the city and covers an area of about 7,250 hectares, making up about a tenth of the city. Of that, 4,331 hectares are land area and another 919 hectares are planned for port extension.
