Germanic Lloyd, the market leader for classification of container tonnage, is headquartered in Hamburg.

It also runs the GL Academy, which provides a comprehensive training programme for all areas of maritime business. All the major classification companies have offices in Hamburg; among them are Det Norske Veritas (DNV) with its European headquarters, as well as Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, NK Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, or CCS China Classification Society.
