Bulk Cargo Terminals

Bulk cargo is handled, stored and forwarded in the form of loose, suction, grab and liquid cargo at various terminals in the Port of Hamburg. Neighbouring industrial plants process many raw materials right in Hamburg. The port handled around 40 million metric tons of bulk cargo in 2010.

Liquid Bulk Cargo

Along with petroleum companies and other businesses that process liquid raw materials, there are a number of highly specialised tank storage companies that focus on handling and storing liquids safely. Concentrated fruit juices, palm oil, alcohol, latex or acids are stored according to their requirements. These companies offer a variety of additional services beyond just handling and storage.

Dry Bulk Cargo

Suction cargo like grain, oilseeds and animal feed plays an important role in the Port of Hamburg, both as import and as export cargo. Seagoing ships and barges can tie up directly at the huge silos. High performance stationary conveyors guarantee fast loading and discharge.

The companies take care of processing and storage, as well as handling. With a storage capacity of around one million tons, Hamburg takes first place in Europe for bulk cargo.

Grab Cargo

There is plenty of open storage space in the Port of Hamburg for coal, ore, building materials and other grab cargo. The channels along the quays are deep enough that bulk carriers can be loaded or discharged even at low tide. Intermodal transhipment between seagoing ships and barges or ships and railcars or trucks is possible at all the terminals. Covered handling and storage areas are also available. This is especially important for moisture-sensitive cargo like potash that is exported via Hamburg.
